The Fowler family of Willoughby Park have stated their intention to be serious and dedicated players with a long term commitment to the Great Southern wine region of WA. In April 2011 Kalgan River became part of Willoughby Park.
This tiny vineyard is a Great Southern gem hidden where you would never find it - a long way from anywhere! It is an extraordinary piece of country at the eastern end of the Porongurups and has already achieved a 5 star rating from James Halliday who has described it as a "mighty mouse of a vineyard". Since 2007 this "mighty mouse" has notched up several Trophies and numerous gold and silver awards at national wine shows. It's wines speak volumes of the elusive concept "terroir" or as winemaker, Andries Mostert says - it's all about the rock.
The Kalgan River wines are dry grown, single vineyard wines and Willoughby Park winery is proud to be the custodians of this iconic vineyard.
Loaded with intense floral/citrus/lime and fresh acidity to balance a mere touch of residual sweetness. Lifted aromas of kaffir lime leaf with hints of almond blossom and cut lemon. A generous palate yet has a crisp mineral texture typical of the Kalgan River vineyard. The flavour is driven by preserved lemon and citrus acidity leading to a long finish.

Elegant and complex with white peach fruit and a textured, creamy character woven through. A lifted nose, with fresh nectarine, grapefruit, raw green walnuts and spicy oak aromas. The wine has a lovely freshness on the palate, with succulent white peach, pithy grapefruit and layers of minerality. Lively citrus acidity drives the wine to a long, lingering and complex finish.
95 points - James Halliday 2011
GOLD Medal - 2011 Australian Boutique Wine Awards
Brilliant aromatic intensity with botrytis characters of apricot, melon and saffron complementing classic Riesling varietal aromas. The palate is rich and luscious yet refined. Complex and mouth filling tropical fruit and citrus flavours are balanced with crisp clean acidity on a long lingering palate.

TROPHY for "Best Fortified or Sweet Wine" - 2011 Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia
Some spiciness with a sweet, red, oven roasted fruit nose. There is some fragrancy resulting from co–fermentation of the Shiraz with Viognier. An abundance of fresh plums and blackberry with typical cool climate pepper and spice overtones. Palate shows some earthy minerality and lovely soft silky tannins, all creating a well balanced and very pleasing mouthfeel. A beautifully sensual wine!
An enticing combination of dark plum with subtle black pepper aromas and hints of oriental spice. A complex palate with rich black fruit of great intensity, finesse and savoury spiciness; plentiful tannins that are super smooth and complete the palate.

Lifted aromas of red and black berries, spicy cedar and a subtle dry leaf character typical of classic Cabernet. The palate has a burst of red and black currant fruit with a fine, supple mouth feel and savoury notes of black olive and dried leaf complexity. A classic cabernet tannin frame and intensity of fruit will ensure that the wine will age beautifully over many years.
