See our BlogOnce upon a time in the early 1800's Henry John Willoughby was born in England. He was to become a Major General serving the Empire in India.
In keeping with the family's adventurous nature one of the General's daughters married James Fowler, an English Gentleman, who was a tea and coffee plantation owner in South America. Eventually as this branch of the family travelled so did the Willoughby name - through the generations and across the seas - to Australia's Great Southern wine region.
Today the descendents of the South American planter have continued the story of beautiful locations and life's "little everyday luxuries" in establishing a boutique winery and Denmark's first craft brewery. To honour their illustrious forbears and in recognition of family tradition, the property is named Willoughby Park.
Andries Mostert says he loves being a hands on winemaker – “there are few jobs where you can get so dirty on a daily basis!”. After completing his studies in Adelaide, Andries has worked for some of Australia’s finest – Moss Wood, Brokenwood, Smith and Shaw, Picardy and Plantagenet Wines. Andries’ philosophy is a common creed at Willoughby! “ I consider what happens in the vineyard to be by far the most important step of the winemaking process and the single controlling factor in whether one can make great wine or not, is whether you have a great site. This is why I am so excited about being at Willoughby Park, having such sources of fruit from our select few growers and our own Kalgan River Vineyard. I love winemaking because it is a rare combination of art and science and I enjoy being connected to the earth and seasons.”
A new face in the Great Southern region, The Boston Brewery, Denmark's first craft brewery where head brewer Fiona Geraty is now making a range of four core beers and seasonal specialities to suit the climate.
